Susannah, I believe that Britta's is an excellent choice for any occasion, I rarely get over to the Irvine Campus area, and am certain that I am missing out on "The Counter," etc., since the last time I visited. The best burger is hard to make certain choices about, but Britta's is as lovely as you say. There is nothing like a little bit of "hopping" ambience, fresh squeezed orange juice, the French-feel, and very nice service w/ quality breakfast.

Britta's Cafe in Irvine has amazing breakfasts - their Raqi's (sp?) pancakes (with granola topping) are fantastic. Fresh squeezed orange juice, and delicious complimentary scones & breakfast breads.

Annmarie, I have not had the opportunity to enjoy brunch at Ramos Cafe--as it is always quite a bit out of the way. My good source in the San Juan area is hip with the owner/chef, and they exude confidence and capability--plus cred to the resume. I hope I have the opportunity, someday, to try their Bloody Mary (shrimp involved?). I've heard that it's the real deal.

Break of Dawn has wonderful innovative food....It is close to Laguna Hills Mall around the corner from Trader Joe's. A foodie paradise with a great story also. Cheers

If you enjoy eating outdoors by the water then I suggest Camelot
In Newport Beach @ 3420 Via Oporto (949) 673-3233.
Always a great place to bring out of towners so they can view the bay and the massive yachts.

Try Harbor House Cafe in Sunset Beach. You better concur on the menu selection with your partner in food crime, because 1-platter feeds all. Count the Police Cars outside to confirm how solid the B-fast treats are. They serve most items 24/7. Their crab sandwich is one of my favorite sandwiches on the planet--at any time of the day. Their omelette choices are the size of a new-born. Great Cafe experience.

Cappy's in Newport is similar to Harbor House. Solid everything, and copious quantity.

I concur with Plums as the go-to fru-fru North West breakfast. Outstanding.

Concur with Sugar Shack as well. Very good American food, and a free tattoo and "mammary--job" show. Always interesting. . . .

I like also like The Galley in Newport, for its location and "feel," as well as it's good bites.

Y'all are missing out on.... Side Street Cafe in Costa Mesa! It's near Swirls and Codom Revolution on Newport Blvd. The decor and customer service is just darling. This is a good place to go after you've just slept in and are slowly starting the day. Breakfast is served until 3pm.

Original Pancake House is the best! I love the chocolate chip pancakes and the strawberry pancakes there. There is one in Orange now also.

Cha Cha’s Brings New Life to Old Mexico

By Rich Manning

When you hear the phrase “Mexican restaurant,” what initially comes to mind? Chances are, your bean is instantly populated with thoughts of buildings laid heavy with faux crumbling adobe, archways, and other amenities designed to mimic something from days of yore (or in Orange County’s case, days of Yorba).…

Don the Beachcomber by Rich Manning

The Polynesian motif has managed to cultivate a somewhat maligned reputation over the years in the food and drink scene. Once a proud beacon of trendy coolness, the setting designed to bring the wonders of the Pacific to the mainland have garnered a perception of forgettable food ma…

Haven Gastropub by Rich Manning

Last week, a friend and I were having a discussion about experiencing great food while we happily consumed fish tacos. After sharing a tale with me about how this particular chocolatier in New York City has permanently cast other chocolates in a lesser light, he confessed that his love for this cocoa-infused art led him to realize that he would gladly experience the best type of food the world has to offer, then spend the rest of his days in anger over the fact that the globe cannot offer anythi…

No Bull: Matador Cantina is Terrific

There is one constant ingredient in all Mexican food: love. Yes, I know that such a line sounds a bit hackneyed and cliched – okay it sounds a lot hackneyed and chiched – but it has always rung true in my experience. I grew up i…
