I'd love to hear reviews and experiences about Easter brunch next week.  Going out on a "holilday" can taxing, crowed and dirty restaurants are common place.  Let's talk about the best and the…Continue

Not sure if I should start a new truck-eats section, or just go with tweets about eats. I'll start here. I finally tracked down the Kogi Truck. Met friends, my sis, brought my son--and we all feasted at the Kogi Naranja Truck tonight. We tried almost everything. I have to admit, it was as fun, as it was deliciously "different." Short Rib taco is their signature for a reason. It was my hands down favorite. I would definitely consider the Short Rib Burrito, and anything involving the addition of kim-chee. The The short rib taco has great balance. Interesting, lasting deliciousness, while not being too spicy. Same with the Spicy Port taco. Just as good--almost. I only blew off the tofu products. I am certain that the tofu is as great as the rest. There truly is a great atmosphere surrounding the truck. Not only are the people great inside the truck--the people who seek out the truck are just as much fun to be around. Cultish-yes. Fun-yes. Very friendly people all around-yes. Very refreshing. Though Kogi isn't the "new-new" thing anymore, it certainly still feels like a fresh idea, great concept, and high quality product. Don't even try their "Fair-like" $5 Chocolate Cupcake with some sort of crun-chewy toffee with Tres-leches attitude. Glad I spoiled my son tonight, because I got two bites of that yumminess. Yep, crazy good.

Just a Tweet "shout out" for a unique experience I had while up in Santa Barbara last week: Root 246, by Bradley Ogden. It is a fanciful delight of a restaurant in Solvang. He lives there now, and I had the wonderful experience of having a table "in the kitchen." Guess what "General" was present? The man, himself. A very cool foodie experience. I've worked in big kitchens and witnessed ops in big kitchens, but I still enjoy watching an American master at work. Tasting Menu--check. Great experience--check. All you have to to do is ask for a table in the kitchen, if you're up for it, and share some of your wine with the boss--sit back--and enjoy the moment of being personally "pampered" by a master far more famous than yourself. Surprisingly affordable. Thoroughly enjoyable.

OC RW Sep/Oct 2010: After reviewing menus swiftly, the following stand out--(FYI, I did it quite rapidly, and it's Huntington to Dana Point--centric) but here are your solid contenders for your hard earned bucks: Antonello, Canalleto, Leatherby’s, Nirvana Grille (I have to try her menu), Pizzeria Ortica was too busy to translate to English (I do know the menu anyways, but. . .it wasn’t that thoughtful of a menu so they thought it might sound better in Italiano), Palm Terrace, Raya (Ritz, Dana Point) Lunch Menu at $20 looks nice, Sage Eastbluff (both menus look solid.) K’ya Laguna (dinner—incredible value, as the menu is nice (uninspiring, but nice) and includes a glass of wine), Spark Woodfire Grill in Huntington (menu looks thoughtful, and includes glass of wine at $30. Hope I can go.) Beach House in Laguna. (I know the Beach House very well, yet I think their menu and location merit a look and an excuse to go out.), Crow Bar for lunch is appealing, The Lido Deck (I’ve been wanting to try their menu, and this is a nice opportunity), The Ritz Restaurant in Newport next to Fashion Island is giving some of their best at lunch and dinner. I like their ambiance and dining. The menus look very appealing. , ((Now here is an odd recommendation: K’ya Rooftop (which I like for cocktails on occasion) is offering a $10 (yep. .) lunch. If you’re in the area, why not?? I don’t know how they are doing it. I guess they are hoping you enjoy a nice glass of wine or a martini to maybe break even.) Obviously, they are just trying to get you in to see that it’s a fun place to have a cocktail and pupu’s after work. I’m a fan. I go there about once every 2-3 mos. (only because I’m not home much.) Sorry this piece is unedited, uninspired, yet is relentless in it's pursuit of a great meal. --Brent
