Oysters is apparently still alive and well, since I read that they were participating in RW. My source was from the restaurant itself. I'm happy that he was incorrect.

And here's info about my favorite Happy Hour in OC. It's at Bayside - http://www.examiner.com/x-17290-Orange-County-Food-Examiner~y2009m9d28-The-best-and-most-accommodating-Happy-Hour-in-Orange-County Check out the food photos.

On Examiner.com, I posted information regarding some of the best Taco Tuesdays in Orange County. Here's the link: http://www.examiner.com/x-17290-Orange-County-Food-Examiner~y2009m9d7-The-definitive-Taco-Tuesday-collection-in-Orange-County

I updated on OCDiningDeals section, and cut and pasted this excerpt for my fellow HH-ophiles:

I consider Pascal's Brasserie (HH 5-7, FYI--but his other deals run all day), Bayside's bar (and a few tables outside) deal 5pm until 9pm (previously discussed lamb chops, carbonara (I tried to copy, and failed. . .), nicely prepared ahi, and greek salad) plus large, high quality, Martini's and Wine for 5 or 6-bucks---genteel piano-player included, the A-Restaurant's 3-6 pm 1/2 price all drinks and high-quality apps (i.e. dinner. . .), Sushi Zen (located on Newport Blvd in the old "Nike Town" shopping center) (check on their HH times: 4?-7?, I forget) for many half-off delicious cold and warm options (I really like their yellowtail collar), plus delicious sake deals (1/2 price on some very decent quality. .) and Oyster's in CDM (if they are still open) HH 4-7 M-Sat, 1/2 apps, $5 wine and $6 Martinis, to be possibly the very best go-to "deals" in the Newport area, presently. I have also taken a liking to RA Sushi (HH 3-7) in Huntington (very American) but if you order right ("nothing with cream cheese, please"), it's quite enjoyable, and the servers have all been very nice, patient and attentive (yup, and right near Main St.--can't speak similar for the sometimes "more than animated" crowd.) Guess it comes with the territory.

Additionally: The Landing is a really nice locale, and has great deals throughout the weekdays, esp. Tue-Thurs. They have a calendar on their website.

Harbor House, The Landing's sister restaurant, has the earliest HH, I think it starts at 1 or 2pm ("earlier to bed, earlier to rise. . . ???), and has odd dining deals during the week. They have good coconut shrimp and reasonable cocktails. If they busted out the back window, and added a deck, they might be onto something.

As I dropped on the Dining Deals section, I'll drop it here as well--if you're going to Hawaii, send me a line, and I'll give you the HH gouge (Navy term) or poop (Army term) especially on Oahu and Maui.

Cheers! Brent

(footnote: lived here 10-yrs, and couldn't remember "Triangle Square" (when I originally wrote it yesterday--hurriedly), vice long-gone 'Nike Town'. .")

Rumor, but I believe I'm correct: Oyster's in CDM is changing hands and is going to become "another" Latin-themed venue. I'm awaiting an email response, and will post what I find out. Very disappointing. I've relied on them for my fresh oyster fix for at least 8-years. Their HH has always been top-notch, as well.

Sadness. . . denial. . .

Jules, I had the terrific Lamb Chops (v. nicely sauced), venison was good but not a repeat, and, oh yes, I agree 100% on the surprisingly well executed Carbonara. I'll order other items the next visit--but I will add the Carbonara, even if to take one bite and bring the rest home for lunch the next day. Next visit to Bayside, I'm going to see if they will reveal the name of the purveyor of the cured pork product in the Carbonara. Just curious, because it's "just right."

Thanks, Brent. I feel a lot better about it now! haha

I actually was just at Bayside as well. I recommend the sirloin slider & fusilli carbonara - yum!

Foggetaboutit! They wouldn't offer their deal if they didn't want you in the door. Most of the time I end up spending nearly the same at HH (drinks and pupus) as I would've for dinner and a glass of modest wine. I'd be willing to bet that I'm not alone on this one. Happy hours at nicer restaurants are fun because sometimes it introduces you to their wares (food, ambience) that you may not have otherwise tried. They want you to become a long-term customer, of course, and they want you back whether it's for their next day's HH or L/D in the future.

BTW, just had Bayside 5-9PM small plates / wine/ martini's (Daily.) I think I posted this in Dining Deals, but for the HH folks--it's very reasonable, delicious, nice service, ambience and clientele--winner. So if Jules is feeling guilty about Pinot, now she can alternate Pinot w/ Bayside w/ Oysters (checkout $20 Tuesday) w/The "A" (all drinks and entire appetizer menu 1/2 price 3 to 6 M-F) w/ Flemings w/Mozambique w/Pascal's Brasserie (Great $10 Menu before 6:30PM) w/ 21 Oceanfront. (Hey, that's a pretty good rotation. . .)

I just looked at the Pinot Provence sips & bits menu and it looks amazing! The only thing is I always uncomfortable going to nice restaurants such as these and just ordering appetizers.

I just always thought of happy hour as a way to save money since I'm a poor college student. So, I have to ask: Is it normal to only order off of the happy hour menu or is it a big NO that I was never informed of?

Pinot Provence is one of my favorite Happy Hours. I know this is bad but they have the best fries :)

Cha Cha’s Brings New Life to Old Mexico

By Rich Manning

When you hear the phrase “Mexican restaurant,” what initially comes to mind? Chances are, your bean is instantly populated with thoughts of buildings laid heavy with faux crumbling adobe, archways, and other amenities designed to mimic something from days of yore (or in Orange County’s case, days of Yorba).…

The Polynesian motif has managed to cultivate a somewhat maligned reputation over the years in the food and drink scene. Once a proud beacon of trendy coolness, the setting designed to bring the wonders of the Pacific to the mainland have garnered a perception of forgettable food ma…

Haven Gastropub by Rich Manning

Last week, a friend and I were having a discussion about experiencing great food while we happily consumed fish tacos. After sharing a tale with me about how this particular chocolatier in New York City has permanently cast other chocolates in a lesser light, he confessed that his love for this cocoa-infused art led him to realize that he would gladly experience the best type of food the world has to offer, then spend the rest of his days in anger over the fact that the globe cannot offer anythi…

No Bull: Matador Cantina is Terrific
