Wine: Five easy steps to understanding what you are tasting

If you’re like my fiancée, who loves wine but doesn’t exactly know why, you might want to take a look at a few tips I developed when I first started drinking wine. These steps helped me to define my taste and expand my knowledge of wine. In essence, it’s the “think while you drink” method. I like to use this mantra in my 101 classes for new wine lovers.

It’s simple really. And even better, it’s all in your head. To begin, start from the top and work your way down: forehead, eyes,… Continue

Another Case for Eating Like a Traveler, Not a Tourist

Anthony Bourdain once came up with the most succinct, poignant tip I have ever heard in regards to getting out of town for an excursion: When on vacation, the No Reservations host and guru of globetrotting implores everyone to “be a traveler, and not a tourist.” Indeed, important words from a man who certainly knows and lives of what he speaks. And these are words that, sadly, I am convinced are not heeded by a hefty chunk of the populace when they embark on a getaway, and it seems especially… Continue

Wine Aerators...to use or not to use...that is the question.

A few days ago I was at a local wine shop and noticed that a few customers purchased some expensive bottles of wine and requested the wine be poured through an aerator.

Right away I will tell you that I don’t like aerators. Rather, I don’t like the “idea” of them. Here’s my beef. Winemakers make their wine the way they want you to experience it and then someone puts their wine through a device that completely changes the structure, the nose, the balance, everything about the wine. It… Continue

Resolutions for the Foodie

The New Year is nigh upon us, which obviously means a cavalcade of well-intentioned resolutions are sure to be leaping out of the mouths of family, friends, or even you. In years past, I have not been much of a practitioner of such annual declarations, primarily because of my immense rate of personal failure with them when I have attempted these reaches at betterment. But instead of feeling sad or disappointed by falling short, I take comfort in the fact that most other people with noble… Continue
