For some of us, food us just a necessity, or a thing we use to stay fit and good looking, but there is much more to food than that. Did you know you can use eat certain foods to create a healthy body, mind and soul? Here is some facts on how food affects our body along with some advice on healthy nutrition.

How is food helping us stay healthy?

Nutrients are responsible for growth, maintenance and development of different body functions and they nourish our bodies all the time. If there is a deficit of nutrients, our bodies start to wither and our health declines, metabolic processes will slow down and stop. Therefore, we should look at food as something that keeps us healthy. Food is in fact a medicine you don’t need a prescription for, but you might require some guidelines how to use it properly.

When to eat certain foods?

Now that you know how food keeps us healthy and that it’s as important as any therapy prescribed by a doctor, it’s important to know WHEN you should eat certain foods. There is a time of day for everything, foods including, and here is a little guide on when to eat certain foods in order to get the best results from your diet.

Breakfast

If you’re hungry when you wake up in the morning it’s a sign of a healthy metabolism. Make sure not to skip breakfast and opt for foods high in protein, carbs and fats in order to provide your body with nutrients required throughout the day. Try preparing delicious breakfast recipes like protein pancakes with blueberries for a complete and balanced meal. Blueberries are so called “superfoods”, especially good for the brain, and you’re going to use that during the day. If you drink coffee feel free to get your morning dose. It’s good for focus and it’s a great antioxidant.

Snacks

Avoid grabbing a donut at work and go for a cup of Greek yogurt instead. It contains good fats and protein that will make you feel full. You can also pop a fistful of nuts that are high in calories for a second boost.

Lunch

At lunchtime it’s smart to relax over a salad with zucchini, squash and spinach topped with rice or quinoa. Throw in some diced chicken and you have a well balanced lunch meal. Veggies will provide you with relaxing vitamin B6 and healthy fiber, and carbohydrates from rice or quinoa will give you much needed energy to finish your workday.

Pre-workout meal

If you like to pump some iron after work, make sure to give your body the energy it requires. Opt for easily digestible carbs that will boost your energy but will not make you feel too full to workout. Try making a smoothie with berries and yogurt or simply drink some coconut water to fuel your body with electrolytes. This pre-workout meal should keep you pumped and well hydrated throughout your workout.

Dinner

It’s best to focus your dinner on veggies. You can have them raw or cooked or even use some leftover vegetables from your lunch. Try roasting salmon with asparagus and put some steamed cauliflower or broccoli on the side. Another thing you can do is add spices. Foods like chili peppers and spices carry very little or no calories at all but will boost your metabolism and control appetite. Plus, they will make your meals taste amazing.

These are just some of the ways you can use food to keep your body healthy. Now you just need to also focus on elevating your mind and feeding your soul, and you have a recipe for a long, happy and healthy life.
