Every September, the tell tale signs of another Anaheim Duck hockey season starts to trickle into our consciousness. Training camp opens at Anaheim Ice. A few pre-season games occupy the Honda Center the last half of the month. And, of course, selected Ducks players make their own sushi for the masses.
For the third year in a row, the Anaheim Ducks teamed up with the good people at RA Sushi at the District in Tustin to present the 3rd annual Get Your Ducks on a Roll sushi making event. The charity gathering, which raised funds for the Anaheim Ducks foundation, pitted Duck superstars Ryan Getzlaf and Bobby Ryan (who, along with Corey Perry, make up arguably the best line of forwards in the NHL's Western Conference) with new teammate Andrew Cogliano, who joined the club through an off-season trade with the Edmonton Oilers. After a fierce yet delicious competition, Cogliano's creation, dubbed the Breakaway Roll, beat the rolls concocted by his fellow forwards, and he did so by literally bringing the heat.
From Left to Right: Bobby Ryan, Ryan Getzlaf, and winning sushi roller Andrew Cogliano.
To be sure, the Breakaway Roll will waken up your palate. The tasty morsel is made up of yellowtail, spicy albacore, avocado and cucumber, drizzled with a garlic ponzu and served with sirracha and a jalapeno slice. Now, you may be skeptical at first that a guy who played the first four years of his NHL career in the notoriously cold city of Edmonton can deliver a flavorful, spicy roll, but rest assured it is fiery and fantastic. And the good news, is you will be able to try it throughout the entire season: The Breakaway Roll will be available at all five RA Sushi locations from October 14th through April 1st.
