When popular chef Rick Boufford announced he was closing his iconic Tustin restaurant Black Sheep Bistro earlier this year after 22 years of operation, a lot of hearts were broken. Not only was Orange County saying goodbye to one of its most intimate dining experiences, it was also bidding farewell to one of its most respected culinary talents. Although Rick and his wife Diana have since moved on to other exciting culinary ventures such as producing video cookbooks and running the Black Sheep Cooking Club, there was always hope amongst Boufford's fans that he would find a way back into a local kitchen and weave his special brand of culinary magic once more.
On September 15, his admirers will get their wish. For one night only, Boufford is taking over the kitchen at Tustin's legendary Nieuport 17 to prepare a special four-course wild-game meal, with each course exquisitely paired with a carefully selected wine. Guests will begin their culinary journey by enjoying a starter of wild boar sausage with gnocchi, shaved fennel, and sheep's milk Romano cheese. From there, patrons will indulge in a beet and fresh goat cheese salad. The third course will feature venison topped with mixed wild mushrooms and accompanied by wild rice and cabbage cooked in duck fat. The meal will be completed with a house-made fresh berry cheesecake. Those who wish to experience Boufford's skill but aren't into game should note that there will be special non-game options available.
The cost for this most special event is $75 plus tax and gratuity. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling 714-731-5130.
