The Balboa Bay Club & Resort Food & Wine Festival - May 22nd-24th, 2009

The Balboa Bay Club & Resort will once again host its ever popular Sixth Annual celebration of food and wine. This will include 8 events occurring this Memorial Day Weekend – beginning Friday evening, May 22nd through Sunday evening, May 24th, 2009 in Newport Beach, CA.

“We are pleased to present this year’s line-up of the “best” that the food & wine industry has to offer. The weekend will feature: twoMaster Sommelier’s guiding our enthusiastic guests through the fine art of wine tasting, culinary delights from our Chefs---with talents from numerous countries, wine seminars, and of course our two signature, and extensive wine tasting evening events with wines from around the world. We will begin the weekend with an educational tasting with the Master Sommelier’s, and that will lead us into an evening on the bay---with a celebration on South American wines and food. The Resort will become Estado magnífico de la línea de costa (A Grand Waterfront Estate) and will pay homage to South American Wines (Vinos suramericanos). On Saturday we are welcoming an Ambassador to a well-known South American Winery, for an up-close and personal luncheon. Afternoon educational wine tastings will be held on specific wine varietals, and what better way, than to do that along-side the Masters? Of course Saturday evening will be the Grand Tasting—an over the top event--with cuisine and over 60 wineries are pouring some fantastic wine. Sunday will include a brunch, and afternoon wine tasting events, closing with a Cigars, Cognacs and Cocktails on the terrace. This will be another outstanding festival, and we are already at work to make this a weekend to remember,” states Dieter Hissin, Executive Assistant Manager and Director of Food & Beverage.

Friday, May 22nd, 2009
-- Tasting With The Masters 6:00 pm $55 (all inclusive)
Ron Mumford, M.S. and Ira Harmon, M.S. will provide an educational tasting with secrets from the professionals.

-- Food & Wine Evening “South America on the Bay” 6:30 to 10:00 pm $125 (all inclusive)
South American wines will be poured, numerous food stations, and festive salsa music will serenade the guests---all under the stars overlooking the Bay.

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
-- Exclusive “Concha Y Toro” Winery Luncheon 11:30 am $125 (all inclusive)
The famous South American Winery’s Ambassador Philip Di Belardino will escort guests through a delicious luncheon featuring South American cuisine, with wine pairings from Concha Y Toro Winery. Philip was born in Rome, and has been involved in all aspects of wine making and the industry for many years---beginning with his family’s wine business. He has appeared on numerous television shows and is a delight. Each wine will be carefully selected to complement the menu. The luncheon will be served in the dining room overlooking the Bay.

-- Chardonnay’s from Around The World 3:00 pm $60 (all inclusive)
Our Master Sommeliers will explore Old World and New World Chardonnays in this afternoon tasting.
The Chardonnay grape itself is very neutral. With many of the flavors derived from such influences
as terroir (the soil) and oak, the wine has different styles—from elegant, to buttery or with hints of fruit.

-- Red Wine Blending—Create Your Own!—4:30 pm $60 (all inclusive)
Guests will blend red wines with a winery representative, and one of the Master Sommeliers. Each
participant will take home their own blend, so join us for this fun experience!

-- The Grand Tasting—Wines From Around The World 7:00 to 10:30 pm
In The Grand Ballroom $135 (all inclusive)
The setting for the Grand Tasting is the elegantly appointed Grand Ballroom. Over 60 wineries from around the world will be present — pouring their favorites — including Estate and Reserve bottles typically found only at the winery. An amazing array of culinary delights will also be a part of the evening’s offerings. Carving stations, seafood, imported cheeses, and desserts will be artfully prepared by Chef Josef Lageder and his impressive culinary team. Live entertainment will be found center stage. Guests will mingle with the winemakers, while Master Sommeliers work the room with wine hints, and laughter fills the Ballroom as friends gather for a fun evening with wine glasses in-hand.

Sunday, May 24th, 2009
-- First Cabin Restaurant European Breakfast Buffet 11:00 am to 1:30 pm $35 (price does not include tax & gratuity)
Including a glass of Sparkling Wine. Guests will enjoy this buffet brunch in the dining room, or on the outside Terrace overlooking the bay. (Guests can request Champagne for an additional cost of $20** per 4 oz. flight.)

-- Cigars, Cognacs and Cocktails on The Terrace 4:00 pm $55 (all inclusive)
Join us on the Terrace overlooking the Bay, as unique cocktails, cognacs and ports are poured, and cigars are handrolled by a local artisan. The Beverages and Cigars are all included. This will be the perfect finale to a weekend of fine wines, and great friends.

Cha Cha’s Brings New Life to Old Mexico

By Rich Manning

When you hear the phrase “Mexican restaurant,” what initially comes to mind? Chances are, your bean is instantly populated with thoughts of buildings laid heavy with faux crumbling adobe, archways, and other amenities designed to mimic something from days of yore (or in Orange County’s case, days of Yorba).…

Don the Beachcomber by Rich Manning

The Polynesian motif has managed to cultivate a somewhat maligned reputation over the years in the food and drink scene. Once a proud beacon of trendy coolness, the setting designed to bring the wonders of the Pacific to the mainland have garnered a perception of forgettable food ma…

Haven Gastropub by Rich Manning

Last week, a friend and I were having a discussion about experiencing great food while we happily consumed fish tacos. After sharing a tale with me about how this particular chocolatier in New York City has permanently cast other chocolates in a lesser light, he confessed that his love for this cocoa-infused art led him to realize that he would gladly experience the best type of food the world has to offer, then spend the rest of his days in anger over the fact that the globe cannot offer anythi…

No Bull: Matador Cantina is Terrific
By Rich Manning

There is one constant ingredient in all Mexican food: love. Yes, I know that such a line sounds a bit hackneyed and cliched – okay it sounds a lot hackneyed and chiched – but it has always rung true in my experience. I grew up i…
