The Derby Deli & Dueling Piano Bar, Mission Viejo, will host its 3rd Annual West Coast Hot-Dog Eating Championship on Monday, September 5, 2011. The all-day event will feature a carnival-like theme, with the contest to begin at 6 p.m.
Takeru Kobayashi, celebrity World-Record holding competitive eater originally from Nagano, Japan, will compete against world-ranked competitive eaters Thomas "Goose" Gilbert of Las Vegas, Nevada, and "Furious" Pete Czerwinski, of Ontario, Canada. Gilbert ranked 1st in The Derby’s 2009 & 2010's contests. Czerwinski was 2010's runner up.
The final open-entry preliminary contest will take place on Saturday, August 13. The top three contestants from each of four total preliminary contests will be given “Golden Tickets” to advance to the Championship, where they will compete against the world’s top-ranked competitive eaters.
Entry is free and the contest will have a prize purse totaling $10,000. The money will be broken down into six cash prizes.
