Bacon: Is there anything that it cannot do? Okay, so it does not have magic healing powers and it lacks the ability to improve your bowling score, but from a pure culinary standpoint, the possibilities behind this mighty pork product seem infinite. It is an indispensable breakfast item. It can turn a mere hamburger into something to obsess over. It adds tremendous flavor and depth to pretty much any entrée it lovingly wraps itself around. And now, you can add decadent candied treat to its impressive resume.
You read that correctly: Candied bacon, courtesy of the Orange County company The Sticky Pig. And yes, it is as luscious as it sounds.
The confection’s brainchild, Tara Simon, has found a way to take bacon to the next level by enveloping it with a host of intriguing ingredients that dramatically increases the food’s already stellar wow factor. We’re not talking about the flimsy “bacon dipped in chocolate at the county fair” treatment here. A cursory look at the flavors available proves this point quite eloquently, such as original brown sugar and chili pepper flavor that started it all, the raspberry jelly doughnut version that can best be described as breakfast in a morsel, and the coconut curry lime treat that contains the perfect amount of exotic flair. If there is a commonality that these delights have other than bacon, it is that each bite is a symphonic flavor and textural explosion of Beethovenian proportions; a combination of salty, sweet, smoky, sticky, and crunchy that you’d be hard pressed to duplicate with any other dessert. If that does not make you want to immediately run out and grab some, let me remind you that the main ingredient is bacon, arguably nature’s most perfect food.
For a complete list of flavors, check out The Sticky Pig’s website at
www.thestickypig.com. As you peruse the goodness, I should let you know that there are some more flavors that are coming down the pipe, such as banana split. However, there is no word on whether or not any of the new concoctions can also work as a rejuvenating talisman.
