OCfoodies Day Tripping: Marina Kitchen has been listed as a recipient of the Award of Excellence in Wine Spectator's highly anticipated 2013 Restaurant Wine List Awards. The Award of Excellence is given to restaurants with wine lists that offer a well-chosen selection of quality producers, as well as a thematic match to the dinner menu in both price and style.

The 2013 restaurant award winners were recently announced on Wine Spectator's website, WineSpectator.com, and will also be featured in the magazine's August issue, which hits newsstands on Tuesday, July 23.
Marina Kitchen's wine program mission is to make wine accessible for everyone. The wine program is dedicated to offering a selection of wines that fit into every budget without compromising on quality, while intricately tying into the modern comfort theme of Marina Kitchen, with a menu that focuses on fresh, sustainable and local ingredients.
The wine list itself represents over 300 different selections from 14 different countries, with the intention of providing classic examples of wine from regions all over the world. With 75 percent of listed wines priced at under $100, as well as being grouped according to flavor profile, the Marina Kitchen wine list is full of variety and easy to navigate for wine amateurs and professionals alike.
As a member of Marina Kitchen's opening team, Sommelier and Bar Manager Joshua Orr, is also a key ingredient to the wine program's success. Orr holds the Advanced Sommelier certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers. Among his list of accomplishments are 4th place finisher in the Chaine de Rotisseurs' Best Young Sommelier National Competition in 2012, Top 25 in the 2013 Court of Master Sommelier's Top Sommelier Competition, and Ranch and Coast Magazine's 2012 Best Sommelier in San Diego. In addition to wine certifications, Orr is also certified as a specialist of Sake from the Sake Education Council and holds a bartender's certification through Pernod Ricard's Bar Smarts program.
Marina Kitchen began its new Tasting on the Terrace series on Saturday, July 13. The tastings take place each Saturday from 5:00-6:30 PM and include charcuterie, cheese and a tasting of three wines on the Marina Kitchen Patio for $15. For those who choose to stay for dinner after the tasting, Marina Kitchen is offering a 2-course wine pairing that allows guests to explore two options of their choice from Marina Kitchen's dinner menu to be paired with wine by a sommelier for only $20-25. Guests are required to check-in at the host stand to purchase tickets for the event. RSVPs are encouraged, as space is limited.
