Henry Weinhard’s Introduces Facebook Recipe Contest for Summer Ale Seasonal

Henry Weinhard’s Brewing Co., the pioneering producer of small-batch handcrafted beer in the Pacific Northwest, is highlighting the launch of its new seasonal, Henry Weinhard’s Summer Ale, with a summer BBQ recipe contest hosted on Henry Weinhard’s Facebook Fan Page, running now until July 11.

Henry Weinhard’s fans and BBQ aficionados of legal drinking age are encouraged to submit their tastiest, original BBQ recipe utilizing Henry’s Summer Ale as an ingredient. The creator of the most delicious recipe, as judged by local BBQ personality “Mr. Barbecue” Bruce Bjorkman, will win a Lil’ Tex Traeger Wood Pellet Grill and a refrigerator stocked full of Isernio’s all-natural sausage.

“Henry Weinhard’s Summer Ale was created as the perfect summertime refresher,” said Bjorkman, who is also the director of marketing at Traeger Wood Pellet Grills. “The premium Northwest ingredients will help bring out the most savory BBQ recipes imaginable, and I am honored to serve as judge. I look forward to seeing what creations Northwest beer and barbecue lovers will come up with.”

Bjorkman, otherwise known as Mr. Barbecue, created his own Summer Ale recipe to launch the festivities. Called the Sensational Summer Ale Sauce, it is perfect for chicken, salmon, pork and halibut.


1-1/3 cup Henry’s Summer Ale
2 tablespoons honey
1 cup apple sauce
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
1 cup pineapple juice
2 teaspoons Wasabi paste (add more if you want a hotter taste)
1/3 cup Teriyaki Sauce
8 oz. crushed pineapple

Makes approximately 2 cups of sauce

In a two-quart saucepan, add all the ingredients and stir over medium heat for approximately 8 minutes. Then lower heat and simmer to reduce the sauce by one-half to three-quarters, depending on how thick you like your sauce.

Use a pastry brush to brush on the meat in layers, applying approximately every 10 minutes while cooking.

Kolsch-Style Ale

Henry Weinhard’s Summer Ale, a kolsch-style ale fashioned after the Kolsch ales of Cologne, Germany, features two-row malt and wheat malt, in addition to Pacific Northwest-grown Willamette and Galena hops. The beer is brewed in Hood River, Ore., at Full Sail Brewing Co.

Henry’s Summer Ale is available on tap and in six- and 12-packs at Pacific Northwest stores, restaurants and establishments. The new summer seasonal brew will be available through the end of August.
