Kicked Up Memorial Day Burgers at Crow Bar

When someone says "Memorial Day Weekend," one's thoughts tend to drift to the image of a guy standing behind a grill, donned in an apron with some goofy slogan plastered upon it, applying a spatula to the underside to a gradually charring hunk of meat.  It also conjures up visuals of nothing much more beyond a cooked patty and possibly a bubbling slice of American cheese stretched across its surface.  It's a delicious sight to behold, of course, but can the idea of the Memorial Day weekend burger be expanded beyond your basic beef and cheese base?

 

The Crow Bar in Corona Del Mar thinks so.  To prove it, the popular gastropub is opening at 9:00 AM on Memorial Day and ready to cook up some kicked-up burgers for you.  Indeed, the burgers that Executive Chef John Cuevas has dreamed up are definitely not your father's burgers, or your uncle's, or whoever it is who typically mans the grill for your brood on the unofficial summer kickoff weekend. Just check out what kind of burger madness you'll have to choose from:


  • the hangover burger – nitrate-free bacon, aged cheddar, fried organic hen’s egg ($12)
  • the ‘grandma jane’ –herbed cream cheese, sliced red onion, organic vine ripe tomato, onion sprouts on a toasted English muffin ($8)
  • the classic – butter lettuce, organic vine ripe tomato, white onion, secret sauce on a caramelized onion bun ($8)
  • the crow burger – tallegio & gorgonzola, house made ketchup, wild rocket on a rosemary bun ($8.50)
  • the crow ‘black label’ burger – 8 ounce signature blend includes 21 day, dry aged prime rib eye, with bone marrow butter, caramelized onions on a buttermilk bun ($19)
So if you are looking to move beyond the realm of mere meat and cheese betwixt a bun, you may want to check out the type of hamburger alchemy that is possible.  And rest assured, the talented people in the kitchen do indeed wear aprons.
