Mozambique, a local dining favorite since 2005, has opened a casual new concept, Mozambique Peri-Peri, at The Bluffs in Newport Beach. The new restaurant serves many of the same dishes as its big sister restaurant in Laguna Beach, but in smaller portions well suited to a casual format.
The menu at Mozambique Peri-Peri features starters such as Vegetarian or Beef Samosas served with cilantro aioli, Grilled Prawns and Chicken Pops (marinated chicken served with Asian slaw and Peri-Peri sauce.) The restaurant also has a variety of Curry Bowls, including Mozambique Curry shrimp with vegetables, Chicken curry with Moroccan rice and a Vegetarian Curry. Mozambique Peri-Peri also offers Roti Wraps including a Peppadrop Steak Wrap, Chicken Curry Wrap, Boerewors Sausage or Vegetarian.
Grilled items include a Prego Steak Sandwich with grilled onions, lettuce, tomato and spicy aioli; Boerewors Sausage on a Portuguese Roll; Chicken Peri-Peri; and a 8 oz. Mozambique Burger. The menu is rounded out with salads, Maputo Platters and Peri-Peri Plates -- larger combinations -- as well as a Family Style Menu with Peri-Peri Chicken and Grilled Prawns. Mozambique Peri-Peri also serves select domestic and Eastern African beer, and South African wines.
“We are excited to expand the popularity of Mozambique with a smaller, more casual format,” said owner Ivan Spiers. “We have loyal fans in the coastal community, and we are happy to open in a convenient location such as The Bluffs.”
Mozambique Peri-Peri in Newport Beach and its larger sister restaurant in Laguna Beach bring the tastes and smells from the beaches of Mozambique on the east coast of Africa to coastal Orange County. After years of vacationing in the area and enjoying the region’s unique blend of African, Arab, Portuguese and Indian influences, Orange County resident Ivan Spiers wanted to bring his favorite flavor, Peri-Peri, to his hometown. Peri-Peri, a small red pepper the locals dried, crushed and used with many of the dishes, is what has made Mozambique’s cuisine an Orange County favorite for more than six years. The combination of Peri-Peri with garlic, lemon, salt, olive oil, fresh fish, prawns and wood-fired cooking is reminiscent of native cuisine from South Africa and Portugal.
Mozambique Peri-Peri is located in The Bluffs shopping center at MacArthur Blvd. and Bison Ave. in Newport Beach. The restaurant is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and can be reached at (949) 718-0956.
